The Salmon River Fishery
The Salmon River Fishery (12 miles of fishable
water) was instituted in the late 70's when the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation built the Salmon River
Fish hatchery located in Altmar, NY specializing in Pacific Salmon (Chinooks and Cohos) along with Steelhead Trout and
Brown Trout. The hatchery is averaging returns of over 250,000 Salmon and around 25,000 Steelhead.
Chinook Salmon are currently averaging 25
lbs. with good numbers of fish in the 30s. Coho Salmon returns are increasing in size and numbers. 2007's return was the best
return for Coho's that we've seen in years with Coho's averaging 14lbs.. Steelhead are averaging 8-12lbs. with a few
20lbers caught every year. The Salmon River is an outstanding fishery 12 months a year offering trophy Trout, Salmon, Steelhead. During
the summer months have the river to yourself as you chase trophy Smallmouth Bass. Once you hook into one of these
beast you'll be HOOKED!!!!
The Salmon Run starts in late August
each year and builds to a peak by mid-October. Early returning fish are bright and silver and extremely agressive. As the
Salmon run increases, so does the numbers of Steelhead and Brown Trout. This is due to the hormoes relesed
by the eggs and spawning of the Chinook and Coho salmon. These fish come in to gobble up the eggs left by the Salmon.
They will also gobble up your offering, as you watch these fish run and do summersaults in the air you'll truly be hooked!
